ISG Vertical Pipeline Centrifugal Pump valve setting during commissioning

During the commissioning phase of an ISG vertical pipeline centrifugal pump, proper valve setting directly determines whether the unit can smoothly reach its designed operating point without experiencing motor overload, water hammer, or unexpected internal component damage. Many commissioning teams rush through valve adjustments to meet project deadlines, leading to unstable system performance that only surfaces weeks or months later during continuous operation. Every valve position adjustment should be carried out gradually, with real-time monitoring of pressure, current, and vibration readings to ensure the pump and connected piping stay within safe operating limits at every step.

Suction Side Valve Position and Locking

Before the pump is energized, the suction side isolation valve must be fully opened and left in this position for the entire commissioning process, never partially throttled to adjust flow or pressure. Even a small partial closure on the suction side will create an artificial pressure drop that pushes the pump into cavitation the moment it reaches full speed, causing rapid impeller pitting, noise, and unstable flow that can damage internal components in a very short time. Once the suction valve is fully opened, mark its handle position clearly so that operation and maintenance personnel can quickly confirm it has not been accidentally closed during subsequent system checks. For installations with a suction strainer installed upstream of the pump inlet, confirm that the strainer bypass valve remains fully closed and the strainer isolation valves are fully open, so all incoming fluid passes through the filter element to protect the impeller from stray construction debris left in the piping. This step eliminates the most common suction-side commissioning mistake that leads to avoidable pump damage during initial startup.

Discharge Side Valve Startup and Throttling Sequence

When the pump is first started, the discharge side gate valve must be kept in a nearly closed position, to limit the initial motor startup current and prevent the unit from running at full unloaded flow that would push power consumption far above the rated value. After the motor reaches stable full speed and the suction and discharge pressure readings show steady, consistent values, begin opening the discharge valve slowly in small increments, pausing for 30 to 60 seconds after each adjustment to let system conditions stabilize. Never open the discharge valve all at once, as this sudden change in flow can create water hammer shock that travels back through the piping and damages the pump casing, flanges, and connected instruments. Continue making small, gradual adjustments until the system flow and pressure readings match the designed operating point, and check the motor current at every step to ensure it never exceeds the nameplate rated value. If the current rises above the allowed threshold, close the discharge valve slightly to reduce the flow load, rather than letting the motor run under overloaded conditions for extended periods.

Check Valve and Auxiliary Circuit Valve Alignment

After the main discharge valve is set to the target operating position, verify that the non-return check valve installed on the discharge side can open fully under normal operating flow, and closes completely and smoothly when the pump is shut down. A check valve that sticks in a partially open position will allow reverse flow to rush back through the pump during shutdown, spinning the impeller in reverse at high speed and damaging the shaft, bearings, and mechanical seal. For any auxiliary bypass, drain, or pressure relief lines connected to the pump system, confirm that all normally closed valves are fully shut and all normally open auxiliary vent valves are completely closed, so no unintended flow diversion disrupts the commissioning test data or creates hidden leakage points. If the system includes a minimum flow recirculation line, confirm that its control valve opens automatically when pump flow drops below the allowed minimum value, to prevent the pump from running for extended periods with the main discharge valve nearly closed, which would cause trapped fluid inside the casing to overheat and damage the seal and impeller. All these auxiliary valve settings must be verified both during full-speed operation and during simulated shutdown tests to ensure the entire system behaves as expected under all commissioning scenarios.
