ISG Vertical Pipeline Centrifugal Pump no-load test running guidance

No-load test running for a vertical pipeline centrifugal pump is a critical commissioning step that verifies basic mechanical integrity before the unit is subjected to full system pressure and process load. This procedure isolates the pump’s core rotating assembly from external piping forces and fluid dynamic loads, allowing technicians to catch hidden installation errors, misalignment issues, or factory assembly defects before they escalate into costly damage under full operating conditions. A properly executed no-load test establishes a reliable performance baseline that supports long-term predictive maintenance and reduces the risk of unexpected failure during formal system handover.

Pre-test system isolation and safety preparation

Before starting any no-load test, fully close the suction and discharge isolation valves to separate the pump body completely from the rest of the connected piping network. This eliminates any possibility of system pressure surges, accidental backflow, or external piping stress interfering with the test results. Disconnect any mechanical couplings or adapter flanges that would transmit external load or pipe strain to the pump casing, ensuring the unit operates completely free of forces from adjacent equipment. Lock out and tag all power sources leading to the motor to allow full visual inspection of the coupling gap, bolt tightness, and flexible element condition. Clear the entire test area of loose tools, spare parts, and unrelated personnel, and confirm all safety guards, coupling shields, and protective enclosures are properly reinstalled and secured. Check that all auxiliary systems including seal flush lines, bearing cooling circuits, and pressure sensing lines are connected, vented, and ready to operate before any power is reintroduced to the motor.

Pre-rotation mechanical and electrical validation

Once the system is fully isolated, manually turn the pump rotor through three to five complete revolutions using a suitable tool on the exposed coupling. The rotor should move smoothly and evenly through the full rotation, with no stiff spots, scraping noises, or unexpected resistance that would signal bearing seizure, internal component interference, or misaligned shaft position. Verify that the motor winding insulation resistance meets the minimum safe value for no-load operation, and confirm all overload, short-circuit, and phase loss protection devices in the control circuit are calibrated and active. Check the bearing lubricant level and condition in both the pump and motor bearing housings, making sure the oil sits at the exact marked reference point and no contamination or moisture is visible in the sump. Open all vent ports on the pump casing, seal chamber, and auxiliary piping to release any trapped air, then close them once a small amount of clean operating fluid seeps out to ensure no air pockets remain near critical lubrication or sealing points.

Short-duration uncoupled motor run

Separate the motor from the pump completely by removing the coupling bolts or flexible insert, so the electric motor can run entirely on its own without driving any pump components. This test isolates the motor’s performance from any pump-related issues, allowing technicians to confirm correct rotation direction, no-load current, and motor frame vibration levels independently. Energize the motor for a short, controlled duration, and observe that it runs smoothly with no abnormal noise, excessive heating, or unexpected current fluctuations. Record the uncoupled motor current, bearing temperature, and vibration readings at multiple points on the motor frame and bearing housings, and compare these values to the motor’s rated no-load performance data. If any reading falls outside acceptable limits, shut down power immediately to investigate the root cause, rather than proceeding to couple the motor to the pump and risking secondary damage. Once the uncoupled motor test is fully completed and all results are confirmed satisfactory, shut off power, re-align the coupling, and reinstall all coupling hardware and protective guards.

Coupled no-load operation and performance logging

With the motor and pump properly reconnected, perform a final check to confirm no tools or loose items have been left near rotating components before starting the unit for coupled no-load operation. Run the assembled pump for the duration specified in site commissioning procedures, continuously monitoring vibration levels at the pump bearing housing, motor bearing housing, and base plate mounting points. Track the motor current at regular intervals to confirm it stays stable and does not drift upward unexpectedly, which would signal hidden internal friction or rotor misalignment. Listen closely through the full test period for any irregular noise, such as grinding, rattling, or high-pitched whining that indicates bearing damage, impeller rub, or loose internal hardware. Record all vibration, temperature, and current readings at the start, midpoint, and end of the no-load test, and log every observation in the permanent equipment commissioning file. Once the test concludes and all readings are verified to meet acceptable standards, shut down the motor, lock out the power supply, and perform a final post-test inspection to confirm no fasteners have loosened and no unexpected wear marks have appeared on coupling or rotating components.
