ISG Vertical Pipeline Centrifugal Pump abnormal vibration troubleshooting

When an ISG vertical pipeline centrifugal pump shows abnormal vibration during operation, the issue rarely appears without clear underlying signs that experienced site technicians can trace step by step. Even small, overlooked details during installation, commissioning, or routine operation can gradually escalate into noticeable shaking, pipe rattling, or unexpected bearing wear. This guide walks through practical, field-verified troubleshooting steps that help locate root causes efficiently without unnecessary disassembly.

‌Initial On-Site Visual and Fast Check‌
Start with the simplest accessible points before opening any pump components. Walk around the base and pipeline to confirm all anchor bolts are tightened to the recommended torque value, and no visible gaps exist between the baseplate and the foundation. Check every pipe support near the pump inlet and outlet to ensure none are loose, cracked, or completely missing, since unsupported pipe weight can transfer extra stress directly to the pump casing and shaft. Inspect the coupling guard and coupling elements to see if any rubber or spacer pieces show uneven wear, cracks, or misalignment marks that indicate repeated impact during startup. Take a moment to listen near the suction flange for faint hissing sounds, which often signal small air leaks that can introduce entrained gas into the flow and trigger unstable operation. These quick checks take less than 15 minutes and resolve a large percentage of routine vibration cases immediately.

‌Mechanical System Alignment and Component Inspection‌
If the initial fast check does not reduce vibration, move on to verify shaft alignment between the motor and pump. Use a proper alignment tool to measure both radial and angular offset across the coupling, making sure readings stay within the tolerance range specified for this class of rotating equipment. Even a small offset that falls within acceptable limits during static conditions can shift once the system reaches operating temperature, causing consistent vibration at one to two times the rotational speed. After confirming alignment, check bearing lubrication levels and condition, ensuring grease or oil is not contaminated with metal particles, water, or dust that can increase internal clearances. Remove the impeller cover if access allows, and inspect the impeller surface for buildup of sediment, uneven corrosion, or chipped edges that can break the original rotor balance. Any uneven mass distribution on the rotating assembly will generate periodic force that amplifies through the entire pump structure and transfers to connected piping.

‌Hydraulic and Operating Condition Verification‌
Many persistent vibration issues trace back to hydraulic conditions rather than purely mechanical faults. Confirm the pump is not operating far outside its best efficiency point, especially at flow rates below 40 percent of the designed value, which can create strong internal vortices and pressure fluctuations inside the casing. Check the suction strainer and inlet pipeline for partial blockages that reduce available net positive suction head, creating cavitation that produces characteristic cracking noises and sharp, unstable vibration. Verify liquid level in the suction tank is high enough to prevent air from being drawn into the pipe, and check all gasket joints, valve stems, and instrumentation ports on the suction side for signs of leakage that could allow air ingress. If the system runs with a variable speed drive, test vibration readings at different operating speeds to see if a specific speed range produces a sharp spike, which may indicate structural resonance between the rotating frequency and the natural frequency of the base or piping. Adjusting operating speed slightly or adding additional structural support can often break this resonance and bring vibration back to acceptable levels.
